ITS UG Campus organized industrial visit to Sulabh International for BBA & BCA 1st Year Students on April 22, 2022

The objective behind this visit was to study about Public health and hygiene. To explore techniques involved in Waste Water Management, Sewage treatment, to understand the working of Biogas Plant, and also about creating awareness on basic Sanitation Methods.

Sulabh International is founded in 1970 by Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak, Sulabh’s has its contribution in the field of sanitation both monumental in scale and historical in its application. The working areas of Sulabh International are: Equitable Sanitation, Rural Sanitation, Urban Sanitation (Public Toilets), Community Toilets, Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) etc. In sulabh International, Ms. Nargis describes the methodology of community toilet linked biogas plant. It is a special system in which human excreta from the Sulabh public toilets goes through the biogas digester. When decomposition takes place it produces biogas. Inside the digester biogas is produced due to anaerobic fermentation by the help of methanogenic bacteria. The biogas, thus produced, is stored inside the digester with an inbuilt liquid displacement chamber. After that the students were taken to the toilet museum where they were shown a rare collection of facts, pictures and objects detailing the historic evolution of toilets from 2500 BC till date. They could see a chronological account of developments relating to technology, toilet related social customs, toilet etiquettes, prevailing sanitary conditions and legislative efforts of different times. Students visited toilet museum, faecal sludge division where faecal waste converts into bio-energy and bio-fertilizers.

During the visit, the students got the first-hand experience on various toilet models designed, developed and successfully implemented by the low-cost sanitation. Students also gathered knowledge about the history of toilets from the Indus Valley where a highly developed drainage system existed, to the countries in Europe where most of the early technological developments in the evolution of toilets took place. They also got to know about how faecal waste converts into bio-energy and bio-fertilizers that is their own innovation. They were made aware of all the sanitation projects and water for all programs run by this NGO.
